HASLETT - Haslett High School students participated in a week of college awareness and career development.
The week was geared towards preparing the students for their future by introducing the students to colleges and new careers.
"Our students is every class they went to they got to hear about another in demand job and so students heard about the most in demand jobs from now until 2022 and which schools have the programs and the average salary for those jobs," said Haslett High School Counselor Samantha Brunnschweiler.
Nearly 50 high demand hobs were introduced to the students. Some of which Brunnschweiler said the students never thought to pursue.
"They heard about health care, they heard about jobs within the skilled trades, things as in elevator repair person, that's a very in demand job with a great salary," said Brunnschweiler.
Teaching the students about the salaries that come with these jobs is something Principal Bart Wegenke said helps provide an incentive for students to work towards a plan for their future.
"It's really important to lay out for our students has much they might be making because that's real world for them right now so when you tell them that a job might pay you 40 or 50 thousand dollars or even 130 or 40 thousand dollars, I think you have their attention," Wegenke said.
Throughout the week, the students learned about different universities through the experiences of their teachers. An activity Wegenke said helped students connect with their teachers and make a decision about what school they may want to attend.
""I think those testimonials those personal stories about decisions they made for their future I think are really important for our students to learn and understand," Wegenke said.
After having these discussions, Brunnschweiler said students have been actively making steps toward their future.
"I know right now for our senior class 88 percent of our seniors have already made the college application," said Brunnschweiler.
