MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - From heat embossing to stamping, folks at the Meridian Senior Center were trimming in the holiday spirit while putting their craftsmanship to good use.
That’s because on Monday, Nov. 9th, seniors at the Center participated in a holiday card making class where they learned four different techniques, including heat embossing, pressure embossing, die cutting and stamping.
Class Instructor Tammy Voss said that while this was the first time she’s taught the class at the Center, she’s enjoyed making holiday cards for the last few years.
“I thought I’d share it with others and let them learn some techniques,” said Voss.
Peggy Frisch, Meridian Senior Center’s Advisory Board President, says this class was just one component of many great things they offer to seniors in Meridian Township.
“We had a great time, and she gave great directions,” said Frisch.
One technique had many intrigued as it required a special heat gun, which turns a powder into a shiny, artistic design.
“The trick is to get the stamp centered, and the sticky stuff is covered with a powder that you have to use a hot gun on that you don’t want to get near yourself or the walls or anything,” explained Bonnie Jordan, class participant.
While many will probably mail their greeting cards to their friends and family this year, Jordan said she plans to do something much more personal.
“We live in a condo and so instead of sending a lot of cards in the mail, we now hand-deliver cards to our neighbors,” said Jordan. “We all know each other, and we’re like family. It’s important to give things that are made from you personally.”
