LANSING - On November 10th Governor Rick Snyder signed a roll bill to increase taxes in 2017 which means tax hikes for residents in Michigan.
"It means that eventually as that money phases in it's about 450 million dollars in additional funds and some of that will go to meet the federal match which means in order to draw down all the money that we get from the federal system each state gets a certain allocation from the federal highway trust fund," said Michigan Department of Transportation Director of Communications, Jeff Cranson.
However for Ingham County the general funds will move to the road budget allowing the newly signed package to spend more on road infrastructures.
"That typically translates to about 3 million for Ingham County which we will start to use for primarily additional maintenance, inflation in current aspects of our budget and rising costs we'll certainly use a fair amount of that," said Bill Conklin, Managing Director of the Ingham County Road Department.
If collecting goes as planned, by 2021 600 million dollars of new revenue will come in from raising taxes.
