HASLETT - For a brief moment before the Haslett vs Dewitt volleyball game on Oct 21, volleyball wasn’t on anyone's minds. There was another battle that was much more important.
Devin Luna is an 11 year old boy who has battled more in his 11 years than many have in a lifetime.
He was diagnosed with stage 4 Burkitt's Lymphoma Leukemia, which is a very rare form," said his Aunt Cat Salvador.
Devin’s aunt Cat has been his primary caretaker while he goes through treatment at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, and ever since Devin moved in, he has created a tight bond with her daughter Mia.
"He’s honestly like my little brother, like i want to do everything with him," said Devin's cousin Mia Salvador.
Mia is a sophomore on the Haslett volleyball team, which has been supportive of Devin.
"They've been to our house and he's there and they bond, a few of them have gone to the hospital, and they’ve adopted him," said Cat Salvador.
"He’s been to quite a few of our games and tournaments, he stays as long as he can," said Haslett volleyball coach Drew Dudley.
While Devin may feel like any other 11 year old boy, to the Salvador family and the Haslett community, he’s so much more."
To honor their hero, the team all wore orange.. the color for leukemia, and invited Devin to blow the opening whistle before the game.
"He was really excited… he was nervous… but he was really excited and just seeing him up there it was really awesome, it was great," said Mia.
The gym went silent when Devin blew the whistle, but then, a standing ovation.
"This game really like touched my heart, because everyone standing up for him, it was just perfect, like the whole thing," said Mia.
While Haslett lost the battle on the court, it’s the battle off the court that truly matters.
“He’s in remission right now so he's actually beating it right now,” said Dudley.
