MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Fall is newly upon us and Halloween is just around the corner, and that means tiny trick-or-treaters, which present a very unique traffic hazard to drivers. The Meridian Township Police Department would like to celebrate an injury-free holiday and have these tips to help make it happen.

1.) Costumes should be brightly colored. Trick-or-treating does, of course, take place after dark, and the more bright and vibrant a color is the more it will stand out in the darkness. If a costume is dark, a bright candy bag, shoes, or accessories will also help. Even a small patch of color could go a long way. This also goes for parents and chaperones.

2.) Trick-or-treaters should be reflective. This could apply to reflective costumes, candy bags, or accessories. While few reflective costumes are available, reflective tape and safety vests are available at stores, and many highly reflective candy bags are available. Even a small patch of reflective could go a long way. This also goes for parents and chaperones.

3.) Trick-or-treaters should carry a light source. Flash lights will help them see in the dark and make them more visible to drivers. There are also special indicator lights available that make costumed treaters more visible. Even a small patch of light could go a long way. This also goes for parents and chaperones.

4.) Costumes should not restrict movement or vision. Avoid costumes that restrict the ability to walk, as this will dampen speed, reaction time, and introduces an unnecessary tripping hazard. Avoid masks that restrict vision. Anything less than a full field of vision is dangerous even in a controlled environment, and can pose serious risk at night.

5.) Follow proper safety when crossing or nearing the street. Even though drivers know to expect higher pedestrian traffic, never assume that any given vehicle is aware of any given pedestrian. And if you are planning on driving a vehicle on Halloween night, be aware of pedestrians, but never assume you are aware of them all.

The Meridian Township Police Department and Fire Stations will also be hosting Halloween festivities. The Police will be offering tours of their facilities through out the day, and will offer candy, treats, and high-visibility candy bags.
