MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - ​With prescription drug abuse on the rise, the Michigan State Police (MSP) wants Michiganders to know there are several ways to safely and anonymously dispose of expired, unwanted or unused prescription drugs.

Given the dangers presented by the misuse of prescription drugs, many organizations are pushing to educate citizens on the potential hazards of misuse and provide opportunities to safely dispose of medications.

The Meridian Township Police Department also collaborated with the Ingham County Health Department to help residents dispose of their unused and unwanted drugs safely.

"We want keep these chemical drugs out of our water system, and flushing them down to the toilet, or put them in the trash and go to the landfill, ends up with get them back to the environment, to the water system, and this the safe way of disposing," said Lt. Greg Frenger form Meridian Township Police Department.

Lt. Frenger also said to make sure to remove your personal information when disposing prescription drugs and to make sure you use the appropriate container.

The Meridian Township Police Department has drop box located within the Department that is open for residents to dispose their old prescription drugs daily.

This service is free and anonymous. Liquids, inhalers, patches or syringes are not accepted.
