LANSING - Before the achy, sneezy, feverish flu season hits Meridian Township, PGPA pharmacy in Okemos is recommending the importance of getting your flu shot early.
"Some of the viruses actually change through the years to adapt to people being immune to them," said Stephanie Berri, a Ferris State University pharmacy student. "The one in particular, the H-3-N-2 virus, is actually a different strain this year than it was last year. This year's flu vaccine will protect you against the new H-3-N-2."
The flu vaccine can take a while to kick in, so the pharmacists at PGPA recommend going in sooner rather than later. However, it's still early for too many people to be getting sick with the flu.
College students living in close quarters are highly recommend to be vaccinated by healthcare professionals.
"I haven't planned on it, I got it last year, but I haven't really planned on getting it this year," said nursing student Susan Munoz.
While vaccines are recommended, not everyone sees the flu shot fit for them. Some people claim to get sick from the shot, or don't see the effects at all.
"I'm against a lot of vaccines actually, especially when they're given in the quantity they're given," said resident Tracy Reath. "The flu shot is just because I don't think it works, plus, I'm pregnant right now, and it says it's never been tested on pregnant women. Yet, they push pregnant women to get it. I just think we're all guinea pigs for it right now, and I'm not willing to do that."
