Residents Can Still Get Help on Last
Winter's Heating Bills

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Although it's still warm out, it's never too early to start preparing for winter and thinking about winter costs. That's why Consumer's Energy wants all qualifying residents to know that they can still receive help if they need to catch up from last year's winter heating bills or if they'd like to get ahead this year.

Residents who need assistance are encouraged to file for a State of Michigan Home Heating Credit by Sept. 30, 2015. The Home Heating Credit is based on household size and income, and is funded by the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. It can be applied to all heating costs, including propane and purchased firewood, as well as natural gas and electricity.

"The Home Heating Credit is available to help people who are low income. If you're a family of four and you make about $26,000 a year or less, you qualify," said Brian Wheeler, spokesperson for Consumers Energy. "This is designed to really help provide a bridge and help provide assistance to people who might not have the means to afford their energy bills."

Residents can qualify for the assistance if their homestead is in Michigan, they own or rent their home, apartment or mobile home, and meet income guidelines.

Last year, more than 350,000 Michigan residents received more than $45 million in aid through the Home Heating Credit program.

"When you're in a situation where you're struggling, whether it's a temporary thing like losing a job or having issues with bills, or whether it's because of someone's income not being at a high enough level, it's so easy to fall behind. It's so easy to put off those decisions. We all do that. I think that if people understand they can reach out and really address the problems right at the start, it becomes a lot easier to get to the finish line," said Wheeler.

Applicants do not need to file a state tax return to receive the credit. The Home Heating Credit Claim form (MI-1040CR-7) is generally available wherever other forms are provided.
