EAST LANSING - Michigan State advertising senior Katie Feirer is one of many MSU students who deal with their disability every day, but now, thanks to the addition of a new handicap platform in the student section at Spartan Stadium, she can feel more like a regular student.
“Before this, I sat in the visitors section so it wasn’t as much fun as being in the student section,” said Feirer. "(The student section is) so much fun, yeah I love it. Makes me feel like I’m with all the other Spartans.”
Katie was one of the students who brought this issue up with the athletic department last year, and they worked together ever since to make the $850,000 project a reality.
“It’s been in the making for a while. The athletic department realized we don’t have enough seating for persons with disabilities,” said Supervisor of the Handicap Platform Tom Davis.
The addition will add about 20 seats for handicapped fans, who can also bring a companion
“So that’s a lot, compared to the visitors section which is only 10,” said Feirer.
“They’ve been very appreciative of the space," said Davis. "And as you can see, it’s pretty full.”
The addition of the platform also took away a large amount of seating in the student section, but that doesn’t seem to bother many of the students.
“Well, in fact I expected a few complaints from the students for the loss of the seats, and we’ve gotten none that I know of," said Davis. "It’s a great opportunity for more spartan patrons to come to games, knowing that there’s plenty of seats available if they do have a disability.”
