MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Meridian Township Treasurer Julie Brixie is the driving force behind her team's idea for the temporary ‘Tax Taxi’.
Due to the inability of tax payers to park at the main parking lot and pay taxes, Deputy Treasurer Mary Ann Groop and Bookkeeper Char Bargy developed the idea to have a temporary tent payment center and tax taxi to provide door to door service for those needing assistance. Treasurer Brixie loved the idea and ran with it.
So far hundreds of tax payers are paying at the temporary tent location, reducing the numbers indoors and increasing tax paying customer satisfaction. Tax payers have been pretty happy with it.
"I was so surprised to see this here. It’s great. Right in the parking lot, right when you come in. Everybody was out here and took my payment," said resident and taxpayer, Patricia McKane.
“I can’t tell you how many of our residents are out there beaming that we are offering them curbside service in the midst of our construction project. And we are so thankful that we are able to do it because of the great team we have here. We’ve served several hundred people already with more to go on Monday. Yesterday a gentleman was leaving from working on a building permit and shouted out at us, “Hey, what’s wrong with this place, people are smiling while they’re paying their taxes?”
Taxes are due Monday by 5pm. The Tax Taxi, temporary drop box and tent payment center will be reopen the last day taxes are due, Monday, September 14 from 8am until the 5pm deadline.
