LANSING - For more than 60 years, Michigan firefighters have gathered together to help fund research to find a cure for muscular dystrophy, and this year is no different.

Monday afternoon, dozens of state firefighters, state representatives and citizens gathered in front of Michigan's capitol building for an official media kick off for the 2015 Fill the Boot Campaign.

Fill the Boot is an annual weekend event where firefighters nationwide gather at busy street intersections, boot in hand, collecting money to go towards Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Muscular dystrophy is a group of disorders characterized by progressive muscle weakness and loss of muscle tissue.

This year, Fill the Boot will take place June 24th though June 26th.

"You're going to see a lot of the firefighters out in the street so keep an eye out for them and slow down driving," said Meridian Township firefighter John Mcdermott.

Last year, Michigan firefighters raised a total of $237,623 dollars. Since this campaign started in 1954, union firefighters nationwide have raised a total of $558 million dollars. Firefighters remain the largest sponsor to the disease.
