LANSING - Michigan roads may finally see some much-needed repairs, but it would come with an increased cost at the pump.

Under this proposed legislation, on October 1st of this year, the gas tax would increase by four cents from it's current 19 cents per gallon tax. There would be another four cent increase on January 1st of next year, followed by a seven cent increase at the beginning of 2017. However, 23rd District State Senator Curtis Hertel Jr. (D), says while everyone will have to pay some sort of increase in taxes, he is concerned with the increased burden on citizens.

"People in the state have been paying a dramatic shift in taxes, thanks to a billion dollars in tax cuts to corporations, most of that passed along to individual citizens," Hertel said. "So they're paying more now and getting less. and I think a solution has to include larger taxes on corporations as well."

The bill was passed in the Senate, 20-19, and will be up for discussion in the House next week.
