MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Shane Goodale, a local resident, looking to ease the troubles of the homeless when it comes to getting a new ‘do’.
“For one, the money - they didn’t have a lot of money to get their haircut and then some of the places wouldn’t allow them to come in because of their situation,” said Shane Goodale, Event Coordinator.
Michigan law requires a licensed cosmetologist to only perform haircuts at a licensed salon, and Sera Bella was just that place.
“We just started talking with the homeless shelter and I said ‘We’d love to collaborate’ and you know, get together and do this. We definitely took the time to take care of them since it wasn’t as busy as we thought, but we definitely still made sure that they were happy when they left, and if they weren’t we fixed whatever needed to be done,” said Jenifer Harris, Manager of Sera Bella Salon.
And many of those customers did leave happy, with a smiling face and a full belly thanks to the help from other local sponsors.
“The lunch hours at either the Open Door Ministry or the VOA - the time that we’re here would cut into the time that they provide lunch at those particular places, so I thought it’d be nice if a place in the mall would also provide something to eat,” said Goodale.
So Goodale contacted the local pizzeria, Sbaro, and enlisted the help of his 10-year-old son as delivery boy.
“I did help my dad pass out flyers, and then we had to come here and give haircuts and pass out pizza," said Shane's son, Will Goodale.
The Goodale’s, Sbarro Pizzeria and all of the stylists at Sera Bella are providing their time and talent for free, all just to give back to the community.
“The guy before he left, just a little bit ago, said ‘I feel so much better with a hair cut’, and it’s true, it’s really good,” said Goodale.
Not only a physical improvement but sometimes, a much needed mental one that just might spark some change.
