LANSING - Quidricycles aren't a new form a transportation here in Michigan. You may have seen or even taken a ride on one of these pedal pubs while visiting Traverse City or Marquette, Michigan.
These multi-passenger cycles allow visitors to pedal through a town visiting local businesses.
Recently, the Michigan Senate passed two bills allowing townships new quadricycle regulations. Now, unless prohibited by a local ordinance, passengers are allowed to carry and consume alcohol while pedaling through town on theses pedal pubs.
With these new regulations, this does not mean quadricycles will be allowed to sell and distribute alcohol and the operators are not allowed to consume alcohol either.
Republican Senator Wayne Schmidt said these new bills will help promote what Michigan does best, and that is agriculture.
Schmidt went on to say, "And in this case we're going to see it in some wines or in some vodkas, we have the cherry vodkas up in Traverse City, Grand Traverse Distillery. You'll see it in the micro breweries; it's a great away to promote Michigan agriculture, Michigan restaurants and you know a great opportunity for all of our visitors."
Quadricycles will still have to follow liquor laws and cut off an individual intake if they become too intoxicated. For those worried about falling off the pedal pubs after a few too man, Senator Schmidt said it's not huge concern since passengers have to still pedal while they ride, they'll be burning off the calories and alcohol a lot quicker.
