HASLETT - Our environment is an increasingly important issue for many, which has prompted the students and administration at Haslett High School to take steps to conserve and go green.
The schools various eco-friendly policies led to Haslett High School being named a “Michigan Green School”.
In addition to maintaining planting in courtyards near the school there were several changes made to the building itself.
Changes include; a new boiler system consisting of several small boilers which only activate as needed and run more efficiently then old models. Additionally the school has put many lights on timers so that they are only on when necessary. Also, the school’s green club started a successful paper recycling program in all classrooms.
“I’m pretty sure that everyone paper recycles when they can, if it’s convenient why not, said Tessa Clarizio, president of the Haslett High School Green Club. “So that’s why I don’t think it is that big an issue to get to many people involved.”
Clarizio, a junior, started the green club last year. So far the club has done an energy audit of the school, spoke to local elementary schools about the importance of going green, and is organizing a waste-free lunch at the high school, an event that asks students to pack their lunch in reusable materials.
