LANSING - Professionals and parents came out to hear about policy options for investing in their children.
There are four programs in Michigan that are expected to improve early childhood development.
"Home visiting programs, medical homes for children, you establish a relationship between young children and the doctor, high quality child care and preschool for three year olds," said Jeff Guilfoyle, Vice President of Public Sector Consultants.
Home visiting programs have been found to be the most beneficial.
This program focusses more on the parent rather than the child.
Guilfoyle said, "Take at risk families and kids generally their moms and you connect them with people who can help them with a variety of parenting skills so nutritionist the social worker, somebody who can connect them with social services, teach them ways to better care for their child, and you can see results of these programs when these kids are adults."
To move forward with these programs public sector consultants will get legislature involved as well as educators to spread the word about the benefits of the programs.
There is discussion of a pilot project that would consist of about 5-10 thousand children, but deciding on the right location for the project will take time.
