LANSING - A bill that would ensure approximately $105,000 stays in Meridian Township passed through the house with a vote of 70-39 June 3rd and will be on the Governor's desk.

Sam Singh (D) State Representative for Michigan's 69th district, said at the beginning of this fiscal year, revenue sharing that brought an additional $105,000 to Meridian Township was originally eliminated. Singh said that fighting to get revenue sharing back for Meridian Township, as well as other townships across the state, was a bi-partisan process.

"There has been an appreciation on both sides of the aisle regarding the importance of revenue sharing," Singh said. "For too many years, the state has been balancing its budget on the backs of local communities."

Meridian Township Treasurer Julie Brixie said a major part of why the revenue may not come to the township is a result of the failure of Proposal 1. The funds would support day-to-day operations of the township.

"We use it to pay our firefighters, police officers and the people who run the parks and recreation programs," Brixie said. "Had this compromise not been reached, there was a very significant loss that was going to be projected."

The bill passed the Senate and is now in the hands of the Governor.
