MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Now that's school's out it's time to forget about for the next three months, right? Well that's not the case for those opting for school of choice. School of choice allows students and their family to try an attend a school district different from their current residency. Although you may be allowed to apply, Okemos Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Catherine Ash explains why district's have to approach School of Choice with caution.
"We don't just open our doors wide open to school of choice because there's a tipping point with bringing students in an having expense associated with that and we don't wanna get into a situation where we're taking in non-resident students and having to add staff to accommodate those needs," said Ash.
Some school's have more seats open than others. Haslett Public Schools Superintendent Mike Duda said, "We take students from Okemos, East Lansing, Perry, Bath, Williamston, but we lose students to those school districts as well. We lose as many to East Lansing and Okemos as we gain."
Duda also went on to say that this year they've received the largest number of applications for them yet. Nearly 70 families applied to Haslett Public Schools for kindergarten alone.
With new students does that mean more money? the answer is yes and no. A school receives money for every student, but that dollar amount isn't known to be significant enough to help bridge the deficit school's are facing when it comes to budget.
For example, Michigan Legislators just approved an increase in the education budget.
Although school's will be receiving more money, Superintendent Ash said, "So while it's a positive in once sense, it's not adequate funding to support public schools, or Okemos Public Schools in the way that we need to be supported in order to maintain excellence in the programming that we have."
