EAST LANSING - The Dewitt girls walked into the East Lansing Soccer Complex on Saturday with one senior, a win against their biggest rival Haslett the previous night and a coach who just clinched his 601st win.
They walked out with a little more hardware and win number 602.
Dewitt took over the game early and poured it on all the way through, defeating St. Johns 4-0 to win their class B division soccer title. The Panthers scored two in the first half to set the tone and two in the second to put away. Their MVP of the game was Jessa McManus with two goals.
The first two minutes went either way for both games, but the inability for St. Johns to clear the zone led to early chances for the Panthers. A corner kick for Dewitt found the head of McManus to take the early lead. Just three minutes later, Taylor Bishop cut through the defense and put another under the bar.
"We've been plagued with injuries all season, especially the last five or six games, but the girls finally got comfortable together and had some great passing and teamwork," said Head Coach Jamal Mubarakeh. "Their desire and will to win every ball helped us win this game."
Mubarakeh has coached Dewitt for 20 years, and has reached the state semifinals three times in 2010, 2011 and 2012. He believes his team has another chances to go far in the state competition.
Dewitt now waits for their opponent in the regional competition. The will meet either Grand Rapids Northview or Grand Rapids Forest Hills, who play at 7:00 pm Saturday night. Their game against the winner will be played on June 3.
