MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Harris Nature Center prepared a huge variety of native plants for the Township Spring gardeners on Saturday May 2nd.

The annual native plants sale started at 9 am. It went so fast that at the end of the event at 1 pm, more than a hundred people has made their orders and taken some ferns, grasses or wild flowers home. Pre-orders were accepted as early as February.

Harris Nature Center Parks Naturalist Kati Adams, says planting native plants help the recovery of the butterfly population.

"We hold this to encourage people when they are getting into the gardening mood in the spring to plant natives, for the butterflies, for the birds, and other insects that seem to be on the decline because historically we always plant with non-natives," said Adams.

A lot of flowers sold that day are grown out in the gardens and woods of the Harris Nature Center. So if you take a walk and see something you like, you can get them in your own yards through this kind of event.

It actually is also one of the fundraisers by the park to support its activities and projects.
