MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Multiple residents across Meridian Township have voiced their concern about vendors coming to their doorstep late at night. Now, the Township Board is looking to amend the rights vendors have to go door-to-door.
Supervisor Elizabeth LeGoff said that many people have been scared about knocks at their doors late at night. One resident called the Meridian Township Police because she did not know why a vendor would be coming to her door late at night.
Trustee John Veenstra suggested changing the vendor times allowed for door-to-door sales, and also raising the bond that vendors need to pay.
"I think it's undesirable to have people coming to your door after dark," said Veenstra. "I might prefer to have the deadline be sunset, but I don't have a quarrel with limiting the hours."
The Board considered changing the bond from $500 per organization, and amending the specific times for vendors to show up at people's homes. The goal is to restrict sales after dark, and to provide a sense of security for those in their homes.
Although some members wanted to vote on the amendment during the meeting on April 21st, a vote was passed 4-3 to table the ordinance until a future meeting date.
