MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - An amendment regulating grass height was introduced at the April 21st Township Board meeting. The original ordnance requires that grass nearby a building cannot be higher than 12 inches. the new amendment proposes to reduce that standard to 6 inches, and to change violators' reaction time from seven to three days.

Community Planning and Development Director Mark Kieselbach says that tall grass has been the top complaint in the last five years. The 12-inch standard is less strict than neighboring communities. The existing ordnance could make people who had complaint wait up to three weeks. The amendment tries to shorten that time.

Kieselbach said, "What we got to do is actually to post a sign there, saying it is in violation, giving the owners three days to cut the grass. if they don't cut the grass, the township will have a contractor come in and cut the grass and then charge the property for having the grass cut."

The expense will vary according to how big and how hard the work is, but it is usually 100 dollars. The Township Board will vote on it on May 7th.
