MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Kinawa Drive safety was discussed at the April 21st Township Board meeting.
Police Chief Hall says that this movement has been pushed by Okemos Schools, because students are running across the street at busy times of the day.
"The primary concern was the issue of students crossing Kinawa at the area of Chippewa Middle School," said Chief Hall.
The proposal has been pushed by parents in the schools, as well.
The proposal is to add a street light near the middle of Kinawa Drive, to promote visibility, as well as adding a flashing light feature.
This flashing light would alert drivers down Kinawa that there is a driver waiting to cross at the light.
This is a new, solar-powered technology, and has been effective in other states, like Florida.
"We're exploring new methods for crossings, which is something I think is really needed in our community," said Treasurer Julie Brixie.
The Board was in favor of this change. Adding the flashing light would mean the Board would foot half of the bill, which is still tentative.
