EAST LANSING - Michigan State University’s 21st annual Race for the Place 5K run and walk drew in competitors of all ages to help support and raise awareness about relationship violence.

Volunteers from all over the greater Lansing area came together on a sunny afternoon to shed some light on a rather dark topic.

“We’ve done it for the last couple of years and we’ve participated in it before and I know it’s for a good cause so we like to come out. It’s a beautiful day so it’s nice to see all of the people out running and just encouraging them," said volunteer, Tony Fitzpatrick.

The race is the largest annual fundraiser for MSU Safe Place and continues to provide vital services to those who experience domestic abuse or stalking.

“It is a really good cause and I like to try and raise awareness to it and this race is another way to do just that,” said Garrett Mcgowan, a race participant.

The race is a family friendly event with kids races, refreshments and even participation from MSU varsity athletes.

“There’s a lot of energy, I think people are thrilled there’s nice, sunny weather today. It’s also a fun event because it’s one of the kickoffs for the Playmakers Race Series - the second of the series - and of course it’s a great way to support the domestic violence program here on campus," said Holly Sloan, event coordinator and race committee chair.

Registration was $20 and began at 11am with the race officially kicking off at 1pm. Following the finish was the kids one-hundred meter dash.

With over eight hundred participants signed up both adults and kids alike got to take part in the fight against relationship violence becoming one stride closer to the finish line.
