EAST LANSING - Michigan State University Sexual Assault Program has just celebrated its 35th anniversary on April 2nd.

The program provides medical and legal advocacy to MSU students through free individual counseling.

It also has a 24-hour hotline offered to anyone in the greater Lansing community with the help of more than one hundred and twenty trained volunteers, according to Laura Swanson, who received the Teal Ribbon Leadership Award at the program's award ceremony.

As a victim of sexual violence herself, Swanson produced a documentary called "Every Two Minutes" with eight other filmmakers.

It focused on the stories of seventeen sexual assault survivors including Michigan’s former senate Gretchen Whitmer. She talked about her primary objective of the film.

"I believe it is incredibly vital to the whole healing process and for us to take further steps and actions of eradicating sexual violence to simply believe a survivor and understand how to respond appropriately when survivors think they should disclose to you," she said.

The College of Communication Arts and Science received the Teal Ribbon Award for their support of producing the documentary.

President Lou Anna K. Simon and other school officials also joined in celebrating the event.
