EAST LANSING, MICH. - First, a perfect regular season. Then, winning its first ever regional title.
2014-2015 was record-breaking season not only for Laingsburg, but one that will stand the test of time in Michigan high school sports lore.
Just one game away from a state title berth, Laingsburg could only have imagined a season like this. And like they say, all good things must come to an end.
A little school up north made history of its own this year. On Thursday afternoon, Calumet would bow down to no one.
Calu-who? Yes, the Calumet Copper Kings of the Upper Peninsula is in the midst of its own greatest season in school history.
"Why wouldn't you dream big?" Calumet head coach Derek Gardner said in the press conference after the game. "I truly believed it."
"It was a group of kids I have gotten the opportunity to be a part of since they were very young because my daughter is a senior with this group. I got to know them. They are like my daughters, literally."
Never having been in the state semis, Calumet hung in with Laingsburg through three quarters, took the lead in the fourth and certainly was not going to give it back with a couple minutes to go.
The Copper Kings go onto play Flint Hamady, 4pm, this Saturday at the Breslin Center.
