MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - If you are looking to put your house on the market, now might be the time.
Property values are up in Meridian Township, and property taxes are capped where they are because of Proposal A, which states that annual property taxes can increase no more than the rate of inflation or five percent, whichever is lower.
Meridian Township Assessor David Lee said that this years average assessment was about 5.6 %, and the property tax is capped at 1.6 %.
"It's kind of like the best of both worlds for people," Lee said. "They're assessments are increasing, their values are increasing, yet their taxes are capped based on that inflation rate multiplier of 1.6 percent."
Lee added that this doesn't mean that everybody's assessment in the Township increased by 5.6 percent, it varied by neighborhoods depending on sales activities in those neighborhoods.
If you would like to appeal an assessment, you must call (517) 853-4400 by 5 p.m. on March 10th in order to appear before the Board of Review. Written appeals will be accepted if received by 9 p.m. on March 12.
