LANSING - There was a large turn out for the premiere of "The Cager," a short film that Michigan State University basketball player Keenan Wetzel wrote and directed.

"It's been about a year in the making, by the time I finished writing it," Wetzel said. "I'm just excited for everyone to see it."

How is though, that a full-time student athlete is able to find time to not only write a film, but direct it too?

"You have enough time in the day if you just balance your time out," Wetzel said. "I just had a really good schedule, and started using a schedule, and doing things late at night. Nine and ten [was] we'd do a lot of Cager stuff."

After months of hard-work and preparation, the short film, "The Cager," was released. Many fans came out to the Feb 23 premiere to show their support.

“I’m proud of my boy, Keno," Eron Harris, MSU's shooting guard said. "He committed to something, he had an idea, and went outside the box and said 'I’m going to do this'. [He] combined his time with basketball, and he committed to that project that he had, and I’m really proud of him.”

Harris was not the only basketball player at "The Cager" premiere. Almost the whole MSU men's basketball team showed up, including Head Coach Tom Izzo.

“I think that’s what teams do; they help each other out in more than just the basketball part of life," Izzo said.

“We have to decide at some point whether that be 20 years into the pros or after college, what we’re going to do next in life," Wetzel explained. "I wanted to tell a story about what to do next.”

The movie, "The Cager," tells the story of a college athlete's life after the final buzzer sounds.

“We've all got dreams that we’re chasing," Harris said.

“You've got your dreams, you've got your goals, you've got to find out if they’re realistic, and yet you've got to shoot for the moon," Izzo said.

“You know it was amazing that we did it all," Wetzel said. "And a lot of people did this for either little or no pay, so it was just amazing what came out of it.”
