INGHAM COUNTY - Temporary construction on some bridges along I-96 freeway may be disruptive for commuters in the next few weeks.
The overpasses in Ingham County at Elm Road, Williamston Road, Zimmer Road, Meridian Road and Hagadorn Road are in need of temporary supports.
These temporary supports will allow for the bridges to remain open for the time being, because without their installation, the overpasses could not remain in operation.
These supports will remain in place until adequate funds can be located to repair the bridges to the full extent.
"Currently right now we do not have the longer term program for these bridges," said Kari Arend, from the Office of Communications for the Michigan Department of Transportation.
"We do not know when those repairs will take place, and the temporary supports will stay in until that does occur, and until we can fund it and get that project together," said Arend.
Some areas along the highway will have single-lane closure from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. while construction is underway.
Adding the temporary supports is expected to take one week per overpass, and the project should be completed by the end of March, according to MDOT.
Morning commutes may also be effected by some ramp closures in Williamston. Exit 117-B on eastbound I-96 and the north bound Williamston road loop will face short term closures as the project begins.
