Mandatory Immunization Debate Continues

LANSING - According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), measles is making a comeback in the U.S. with 600 cases in 2014 and 121 so far this year.

As these outbreaks continue, controversy hovers over Ingham County on whether vaccinating children should be mandatory or not.

As students head off to learn math, science, and history,
parents learn that their little ones could be exposed to un-immunized peers.

"I think absolutely they should have to have vaccinations they were put in place for a reason and they're stopping deadly diseases that seem to be coming back now that children are not getting immunized," said Willimston resident Traci Weston.

Diseases like measles, a virus that has both parents and doctors concerned.

"Most kids can get a virus and they do just fine, but the complication with measles are quite severe and can be detrimental to children," says Amy V.H. Blasen D.O FACEP Director for Pediatric Emergency Services at Sparrow Hospital.

Despite the risk, last year, 46 students in Ingham county did not receive the proper immunizations; and although it's required that all students enter kindergarten and 7th grade with certain vaccinations, parents are able to seek a waiver form for both health or religious reasons.

Suzanne Waltman, the President of Michigan Opposing Mandatory Vaccines supports these waiver forms and in an email statement said, "No one should be forced to take a drug against their will. We know that vaccines carry risks and can even cause death. You cannot drug your way to health."

But some mothers disagree.

"I think it's important to understand how dangerous these diseases are and it's important that you protect your own children and other children as well," said East Lansing resident Jennie Waters.

As the controversy continues, Dr. Blasen attempts to put one vaccine report to rest.

"The article that suggested maybe a link between vaccines and autism has been completely discredited several studies since that time has shown there is no link between these and autism," stated Blasen.

Vaccination waiver forms can be obtained through local physicians or your local health department.
