HASLETT - The Haslett boys and girls basketball teams took on CAAC Red rival DeWitt Friday night in games that had league title implications for both teams.

Boys:

The boys team fell to DeWitt 55-48. After struggling with shooting and turnovers early, Haslett had a 12-2 run in the third quarter to get within reach. The Vikings were never able to make the deficit less than 4 and it was ultimately DeWitt that came out on top.

Haslett's Brandon Allen lead all scorers with 21 points, 12 of which came from behind the arc. John Hudgins added 9 points for the Vikings.

Evan Conn had 20 points and 17 rebounds for DeWitt.

Haslett and DeWitt are now tied for first place in the CAAC Red with two league games remaining.

Haslett Coach Chris Smith said he believes his team had some hiccups in Friday night's contest, but doesn't doubt their ability to contend in the remaining league games.

"We got off to a slow start-that is something we have to fix because that's two games in a row now, but we're not going to panic because we've got a lot of confidence in our ability to correct our shooting percentage," Smith said. "I think it's just experience that lets you not panic like that."

Girls:

Haslett's two-year undefeated streak in the CAAC Red came to an end after a 51-47 loss to DeWitt.

The win gives DeWiitt a share of the CAAC Red league title.

With Haslett ranked No. 7 Class B and Dewitt ranked No. 4 Class A, it was obvious this game was going to be intense.

DeWitt opened the game with a 14-4 run, but Haslett bounced back and outscored the Panthers 27-22 in the first half with the help of a 10-2 run with three minutes left in the second quarter.

The game was tied 40-40 with 5:02 left when Haslett's MacKenzie DeCook was fouled on a three-point shot. DeCook made all her free throws and gave the Vikings a 43-40 lead.

DeWitt then went on a 7-0 run to seal the deal. The run included a crucial three-pointer by Maria Moss with 1:12 left to put DeWitt ahead 47-43.

DeCook lead Haslett with 16 points. Megan Mowid added 13 for the Vikings, while Adrianna Stolicker had 9.

Moss also had 16 points and was DeWitt's leading scorer in the contest. Princeton-bound Claudia Reed and Ferris State-bound Abby Nakfoor added 11 and 9 points, respectively, for the Panthers.

Haslett Coach Bob Currier said he believed both teams fought hard, but DeWitt's ability to execute fundamentals under pressure gave them an edge.

"I think that when it came down to the end of the line, they were able to connect on free throws, baskets, not turn the ball over," said Currier. "Things that we didn't do well."
