MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - During the 2014 Meridian Township Deer Harvest, 150 deer were harvested making it the most successful deer harvest since the program started four years ago.

Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger provided the funding for the processing fee and 1,500 pounds of venison was donated to the hungry through the program.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources approved Meridian Township to extend the Deer Management Program into January and February of 2015.

Since the extension of the program, only seven more deer have been harvested. All seven of those deer were donated to the hungry.

Parks & Land Management Coordinator Jane Green way said the extended harvest may have been slower because, "It's colder out there, we've had some snow storms an but you know seven less deer this year still might be 14 or 21 less next year. so every little bit helps."

Greenway went on to say that they are unsure if they will extend next year's Deer Harvest. It depend on the approval of the DNR, but it is a possibility.
