INGHAM COUNTY - The New Year brings in quite a bit of snow compared to a relatively dry December.
The removal of snow on roads both in Ingham County and in Meridian Township is taken care of by the Ingham County Road Department.
The Department prioritizes salting more heavily trafficked roads such as Okemos Road and Grand River Avenue, local roads such as Van Atta Road are second priority followed by residential areas.
"People should know that particularly in residential areas, we do not have enough crew and staff to get the entire Township cleaned up the first day after a storm," said Bill Conklin, Managing Director for the Ingham County Road Department.
The residential areas are divided into roughly four quadrants of about equal millage, the Department tries to rotate which residential areas are done first every time.
The budget for street salt this year is $600,000 according to Conklin, a bit higher than usual based on the average spent on salt the last few years.
