LANSING - No. 1 versus No. 2, a battle of unbeatens, a regional final rematch: What am i talking about?
The epitome and climax of all playoff matches came in the second round this year, when Lansing Sexton hosted Swan Valley Friday night in a match-up that featured superstar running backs.
No. 1 ranked Swan Valley relies on Michigan’s single-season rushing record holder, Alex Grace, and a big, athletic offensive line to destroy its opponents.
Last year, in the regional finals Grace gained 236 rushing yards en route to a 26-21 loss against Sexton.
This time, the Western Michigan commit runs rampant again, rushing for three touchdowns on the day; however, it is Lansing Sexton Running Back Jayvon Wray who steals the show.
Wray outdoes Grace scoring five touchdowns of his own on 235 yards rushing, ultimately, sealing the deal against Swan.
"I knew who we were going up against," Wray said. "I didn't get to play against these guys last year, so it just made this game so much bigger and better for me."
Sexton Head Coach Dan Boggan attributes a quick start on offense to putting the Big Reds on the fast track to victory. Two early rushing touchdowns from Wray put his team up 12-0 at the end of one, and Lansing never looked back.
"Against a team like Swan Valley you have to be at your best all the time," Boggan said. "I am really proud of them. We talked about it, and we executed."
Sexton wins the Division IV District Title decisively, 41-20, and become the favorites to take home the state title.
The Big Reds host Richmond on Saturday at 1pm for a chance at the regional title.
