MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - A rezoning project that was expected to be acted upon during the November 10th Planning Commission meeting has been pushed back once again due to concerns over a large tree on the property.
The 0.5-acre lot, which formerly housed a fire station, is owned by the Township and currently zoned as single-family high density. The Township is hoping to rezone it as commercial in order to increase its sale value. The Planning Commission worries about the fate of an old tree on the property, which once in the hands of a developer, can be either kept or destroyed.
Although the tree does not make a large difference in the rezoning issue, the Planning Commission still would like to gather more information in order to do everything in their power to keep the tree intact.
There have been talks about the tree being classified as a Heritage Tree, however the issue will be brought up again at the next Planning Commission meeting on October 24th.
