INGHAM COUNTY - Ingham County's Health Service Millage is up for renewal on the November 4th ballot.

The Millage, which was originally passed in 2012, asks to continue the levy of .52 mills on Ingham county property for five years.

The 2012 millage was set for 3 years and does not expire until 2015 but Ingham Health Plan officials are putting it on this years ballot in order to avoid a special election.

Brett Dreyfus, Meridian Township Clerk explained that the ballot language is pretty straight forward in what it's asking.

"The Ballot Language says exactly what the health plan covers for who is eligible,basic eligibility requirements, the types of services provided, how much the millage is for, how long the millage will last, and how much money its expected to raise in the first year which is a little over 3 million dollars."

The Ingham Health Plan, which was created in 1998 in order to meet the needs of the uninsured in Ingham, aims at providing the opportunity for 100 percent coverage within the county.

"We have some new programs now, the Healthy Michigan which has brought on more eligibility so people have that option now. And then they have the Affordable Care act and so thats another set of people but its people who fall through the cracks of both of those programs, we expect about 4,000 individuals," said Robin Reynolds, Executive Director of Ingham Health Plan Corporation.


The Ingham Health Plan will provide basic health care services such as specialty care, urgent care coverage, and preventative screenings among others to residents who do not currently have health care, are not eligible for medicaid, and who's individual income is less than $28,000.


People with an assessed house value of $100,000 will pay around $26 a year.

While it may seem that residents of the county will be paying twice because of the Affordable Care Act and the Health Services Millage Reynolds say's, "It's better to pay $26 a year than to have to pay for their coverage when they go to the emergency room."
