EAST LANSING - Michigan State University students hoping to score lower level tickets for the upcoming Spartan basketball season toughed through the cold rainy weather at the annual Izzone Campout.
This season marks the 20th year of the Izzone, the Student Section for Michigan State’s Basketball team. Those hoping to be members of the famed student section braved the weather to attend the annual Izzone Campout at Munn Field, pitching tents and coming prepared to fight the cold.
The Izzone comprises of both upper and lower level sections of Breslin Center, and competition for lower level is tough. In order to be eligible, students must be present at the campout, which lasted from 6pm Friday night, until 6am Saturday morning. The party is kept alive through the night with numerous attractions for attendees.
“There’s a DJ so we're dancing around, there’s so many people meeting new friends," said Michigan State student Missy Christenson.
This years campout also included free admission to the Michigan State hockey game. After the hockey game, Coach Tom Izzo and his players held a pep rally where fans were free to mix and mingle with players and coaches. Despite the weather, the team was impressed with the attendance.
“I mean it’s wet, rainy, nasty, and you got kids out here cheering their hearts out, it’s really impressive,” said Junior Forward Matt Costello.
Through the rain, the festivities continued on, providing what Coach Izzo hopes to be lasting memories for all students involved.
“Well it’s awesome, these guys are great. They've weathered the storm, I think it’s gonna be a memory maker for them 10, 20, 30 years from now they'll be talking about what they did at the camp out in 2014," said Head Coach Tom Izzo.
The pre-season Coaches poll which was recently released, puts the Spartans at number 18, but that doesn't phase the tenured coach.
“You know, I'm cool with it," said Izzo. "I think we've lost a lot, we've got a lot to prove yet, and yet when you can be thought of as having a lot of losses and still be a top 20 program, now it’s our job to move up into that top 10 and see if we can do something special.”
