LANSING - U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, State Senator Gretchen Whitmer, former State Representative and current candidate for Lt. Governor Lisa Brown and several other influential women in the State of Michigan held a press conference on October 14th, addressing issues of contraception, equal pay, and education. Their message to the GOP: Enough is Enough.
The conference was held at the Women's Center of Greater Lansing. Senator Stabenow addressed what she called the "hostile" agenda of the GOP on the issues of contraception and equal pay.
"It's not just one comment, it's not just one bill, it's not just one dumb wedding dress ad," Stabenow said, referencing a campaign advertisement for Governor Rick Snyder's campaign. "It is a pattern that is all up and down the ticket."
Brown said that it was time for women to step up and speak out on these issues.
"The disrespect that has happened in Lansing towards women, I experienced it firsthand, but women all across the state." Brown said. "From the rape insurance to the lack of enforcement of equal pay for equal work. there's a lot that women need to say enough is enough."
As far as what Senator Stabenow sees at the national level, she says one of the biggest concerns for her is raising the minimum wage so it is at a level that people can live off of, in addition to equal pay.
"The majority of people on minimum wage are women that are working hard with their families trying to make it. Making sure we have equal pay for equal work," Stabenow said. "Women still get 75 cents on the dollar in Michigan, and, yet, you don't get a discount when you buy gas or groceries."
