One Step at a Time — A Walk to End Alzheimer's.

LANSING - Every 67 seconds, someone in the United States develops Alzheimer's

"It's a disease that's affecting many many family and its stealing our memories and our people from us so we're hoping to start finding some wins for the Alzheimer's Association," said chair of the 2014 Walk to End Alzheimer's Jill Clouser.

Alzheimer's disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and more than five million Americans are living with it.

"I remember the confusion when my grandfather got sick. And nobody knew what to do," said Lansing resident Anne Ordiway Fowler who works for the Alzheimer's Association. "Nobody knew it was a disease. Everyone thought she was just getting old and loosing it and doing it to spite everyone."

The walk to end Alzheimer's is an annual affair and the largest event to raise awareness and funds.
This year the event took place the state Capitol and brought in over one thousand participates who joined together in a walk to help find a cure.

"It's so hard seeing this type of disease and how it affects other families and being able to relate to other people and also being able to support her and everything that she does," said Colleen Burkhardt who came out to walk for her grandmother.

Participants of all ages and abilities, walked and were able to raise over $150 thousand dollars—the funds going to fight against the aging disease.

“When you step on the Capitol lawn, there’s a thousand people by you, is a great feeling to know that you're not alone,” Clouser said.

The Alzheimer Association is the leading resource for education, information, referral and support to the millions affected with this disease. For more information, visit alz.org
