MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Township Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for its fourth annual managed deer hunt.
The hunt will take place October 1st through January 1st, and is part of the Deer Management Program. It is aimed to combat overpopulation. According to a press release from the parks department, those participating in the hunt may only use a bow-and-arrow. The meat from the deer that are harvested will be donated to those in need.
"Merindorf Meats is actually the processor for all of the venison," Assistant Park Naturalist Nicholas Sanchez said. "Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger actually pays for that processing fee, and then the venison is donated to local food banks."
There are several requirements that hunters must met in order to participate in this year's Deer Management Program. There is currently a waiting list, but, if you are interested in participating in the hunt, you can call the Meridian Township Parks and Recreation Department at (517) 853-4600.
