EAST LANSING - After a trial year, adjustments to the MSU YouVote initiative have been made and are expected to have an increase in effectiveness this upcoming year.

The purpose of the initiative is to educate students on how to register and how to improve the voting turn out for the student body in East Lansing.

The creation of the MSU YouVote came after voting numbers for students going to the polls reached a low eight percent in 2013. That means only 8 in every 100 Michigan State University students were voting in elections.

Members of Michigan State University, Clerk Marie Wicks for the City of East Lansing and Meridian Township Clerk, Brett Dreyfus have collaborated together in creating a stronger program.

Entering into it's second year, members behind MSU YouVote created monthly meetings that have allowed the program to start early. The organization of the program has strengthened communication strategies on MSU YouVote in spreading the word about it's purpose. Social media will also play a huge role in years to come.

"Social media is going to be used extensively this time," said Meridian Township Clerk Brett Dreyfus. "We have a social media strategist that's part of the group as a graduate student who has come into the program as well."

Information on voter registration will be provided to students via the web, through media articles and state wide news and in material forms based throughout student service buildings on MSU's campus.
