UPDATE:
MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Meridian Township residents looking to get back into shape have a new option thanks to an Okemos business which opened its doors in August.
Pure Barre studio offers group exercise classes to train clients using the company's original technique, which consists of core strengthening and thigh and seat work, with an emphasis on stretching.
"It is a non-impact workout and we utilize the ballet bar for most of the exercises," says Allison Weyand, instructor and studio owner. "We do small isometric movements, and the method behind it is working your muscles to complete fatigue and then stretching them back out."
Weyand calls the workout addicting for several reasons.
"Not only just physically does your body change, but it's the whole experience, Pure Barre is, both mentally and physically for women. It's their hour to forget about everything else," says Weyand.
Participants are mostly women of all ages and with a wide range of physical abilities. Weyand says anyone should feel comfortable coming in no matter how out of shape he or she may feel.
"Fitness isn't always enjoyable," Weyand admits, "and it can be really intimidating to come in. We try as teachers to make you feel as comfortable and to give you as much help as we can in a class so you get that hands on correction to help you feel a little more confident when you leave."
Pure Barre is already in several Michigan cities and is beginning to spread across the country.
Among other new businesses are Small But Mighty Arts Studio in Haslett, Pet Groomer in Gables Plaza and Defye clothing store in the Meridian Mall.
