Deer Management Plan Update

Deer Management Plan Update

UPDATE: MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - This past summer, Township officials responded to resident complaints concerning an overly abundant and overly aggressive deer population in the area. Using data and input from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and after deliberation by the Township Board, a survey was posted online to encourage resident feedback on the problem. The survey results indicated that over 80% of resident responders support a managed deer hunt. The survey also shows that residents support other facets of healthy deer population management with about 82% of responders supporting education on deer-resistant landscape options, 79% supporting an increase in signs and/or reflectors at deer crossings and 92% supporting managing roadside vegetation to increase visibility. This years harvest is considered a pilot program, so much attention will be placed on how well the plan is carried out this year in order to incorporate what is learned into future years' programs. Officials hope that concerns about safety will be eased, as Jerry Richards, Meridian Township Manager said, "We picked these properties for a couple of reasons. One of them, they'll be the easiest to monitor. And should be the lowest risk as far as any safety issues are concerned." The proposed plan is to have a controlled hunt by experienced, qualified hunters specifically chosen by Township Officials and only on six land preservations across the township. Those interested in being a part of the harvest can contact Meridian Township to be considered. Also, as part of the approved management plan, all venison from deer on these township properties will be processed and donated to food banks through organizations like the Sportsmen Against Hunger Program.
