MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - School may be out but that does not means kids can’t continue to learn while enjoying the warm days of summer. The Harris Nature Center located south of the Red Cedar River between Jolly Road and Grand River Avenue on Van Atta Road offers summer day camps for toddlers and elementary school aged children. Activities are nature themed with a focus on ecology.
Kit Rich, Harris Nature Center Coordinator says, “We want to get kids out in nature and for them to have a positive experience exploring and learning new things and having fun while they are in nature.”
The Summer Day Camps began on June 17th and run until August 8th. Prices range from $30 to $120 depending on the age group and frequency of the activities.
Parents can expect their children to explore the Harris Nature Center grounds and may even collect a few bugs here and there. Rich says, “We have nets of all different sizes and even the littlest 4 year old toddlers go out and collect leafhoppers, or grasshoppers, or even a little moth or butterfly.”
In addition to camp for the kids, Harris Nature Center will hold Camp Fire Programs for the entire family. There will be five events throughout the summer themed around nature topics like the moon, woodpeckers, and mosquitoes. The Camp Fires will also include marshmallow roasting.
Admissions to the Camp Fire Programs is $3 per person or $7 per family. All summer camps are open until full and parents can register their children by mail, phone, or online.
