OKEMOS - The installation of Dark Sky LED streetlights along both sides of Okemos Road is nearly complete. The road enhancement from Jolly Road to Clinton Street will provide much needed visibility at night for pedestrians to safely walk on sidewalks.
All but three of the 86 light fixtures have been wired and is anticipated to be completed by the end of June. Meridian Township's Director of Public Works & Engineering, Ray Severy, says most of the streetlights are already up and wired.
"The work has been underway for about a month now. All the poles are in. Most of the lights are on top. In fact I heard this morning that some of the lights on the west side have already come on at night now. So they're activated already," said Severy.
Dark Sky LED street lights shine downwards and not up at the sky. It makes it safer for pedestrians while minimizing light pollution. It is also more cost effective than standard electrical lighting.
According to Consumer's Energy, the estimated cost to maintain the streetlights is $10,134.24. Funding for the project was provided by a Federal Transportation Grant with match funds from Meridian Township General Fund.
