MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Just when you thought gas prices were already high, it seems as though they will only continue to climb in the future.
A new tax proposal has been introduced to the Senate to gradually increase the tax on gas prices.
This new tax is aiming towards fixing the roads around the Lansing area. Starting next January, the tax percentage will increase to nine point five percent, and will continue to rise every year by two percent until the year two thousand eighteen when the tax has risen to fifteen point five percent.
The amount would equal to a forty five cent gas tax over the next four years.
"They want to charge us taxes on gas, then they wanna take taxes on the food; where is the money going? We should be able to have better streets," David Emvrey, local man says.
Projected figures estimate that this tax would raise as much as one point five billion dollars for road repair.
