Student Struck By Car While Crossing
Street

OKEMOS - On Tuesday, May 27 around 3 p.m., a middle school student was struck by a car while crossing the street near Chippewa School and Kinawa Middle School.

According to police, the student chose to cross away from the school crossing guard, and that is when the student was struck. Police say the driver was complying with safety speeds and being cautious.

However, the student was not paying attention, and did not check both ways before entering the street. The student was taken to the hospital, but has survived the crash.

"Most of our school districts have the flashing light, the reduced speed, but even when those are not present in other areas, it's always wise to be aware of what's going on around you as a motorist," said Lieutenant Greg Frenger, Meridian Township Police Department. "We encourage motorists to always be careful of their speed in those areas and any reduced visibility."

It's not just the motorists that should be cautious however, according to Frenger, pedestrians should always look both ways when crossing the street, and not assume that the driver will stop for them to cross.

"You may think somebody's paying close attention and watching where you are going, but you need to be certain that they're going to let you through before you step off the curb," said Frenger.

Frenger also offered some tips for both pedestrians and motorists to comply with safety regulations while driving in zones where there is a lot of activity:

1. When you're in the dark, always wear light colored clothing or reflective clothing if possible.

2. When riding a bike, always wear a helmet and reflective gear on your bike.

3. Give bicyclists on the road ample space to drive.

4. When wearing headphones, be extra cautious and aware of your surroundings.

5. Always watch for reduced speeds in school zones.
