MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - As a result of the extreme weather conditions from this past winter, there is no question that roads in the area have taken their toll.

The large amount of record snowfall and ice storms has left many roads not drivable offering damaging potholes and cracks within the road.

Due to a high level of citizens' requests to repair and modify roads within the township and surrounding areas, Meridian Township has formed a road committee to help delegate which roads should be repaired with the amount of funds available to do so.

"The reality is, that there is a ton of roads in our township that need work and there isn't the money to do it," Trustee Ronald Styka said. "You can't fault this list because these need work. Are there others? Yes there are. I think it's kind of important that we honor this committee process."

At the May 20th Township Board Meeting, the board discussed some recommendations to give to the 2014 Local Road Committee in order to move forward with repairing the these damaged roads.

The total budget for the 2014 Local Roads Committee has been set at $700,000. The estimated costs does not however, include costs for work done such as curb and gutter repairs or bringing sidewalk ramps into ADA compliance.

Comanche, Benson, and Franklin, are just a few local roads on the list of 15 for improvement in 2014.

The motion to make improvements to these roads was supported by the board, voted for unanimously.
