UPDATE:
MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - Some residents of Meridian Township can expect construction in their neighborhoods. "We got involved in trying to do a pay-per-preservation program. Instead of taking the worst streets and doing them first, which is not the most cost effective way to do it, we take a look at the streets and try to do the ones we can save," said Meridian Township's, Director of Public Works and Engineering, Ray Severy. Hot-In-Place Recycling and asphalt rejuvenation are the two road reconstruction programs in place. Hot-In-Place Recycling involves laying down new asphalt while asphalt rejuvenation is a sealer that will keep already constructed roads lasting longer. "What we are trying to do is lower out long term maintenance costs," Severy said. These road programs are costing the township over $650,000. My road is falling apart. Every spring I clean out asphalt out of my grass,” said Mike McInerney a local Meridian resident. "The roads deteriorating and it has been for years." Elmwood and Birchwood Drive is just one of the locations that will be under the Hot-In-Place Recycling program. There are twenty-nine other residential streets that will be either sealed or repaired. "Well, I was glad to hear that it's going to happen. I know that it's going to be kind of disruptive maybe for the neighborhood and possibly for the trees along the street but it will be nice to have a smooth surface," said Jay Stark-Dykema, a local resident. Residents can expect temporary road closing and inconveniences. The township is asking residents to be aware of these constructions. Construction will start on September 26. One project is pushed back until next week to avoid disrupting the high school homecomings.
