MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP - The Meridian Township Planning Commission recently voted 4-3 in favor of the Section 61 Review for the proposed fire station. The site is facing near the intersection of Okemos Road and Central Park Drive.
The Section 61 Review covers the site's location, character and extent of the fire station to determine if it is consistent with the Township's master plan. Before the vote a number of Township experts presented their findings about the effects the proposed fire station would have. Issues were addressed regarding the environment, roads, traffic, neighboring property values and more.
"I don't see a basis for denying or turning this down on a basis of science because I just don't see the facts associated with taking a position that it doesn't meet the requirements based on science," said Tom Bennett, Meridian Township Environmental Consultant and presenter.
Township residents also spoke at the meeting with some in strong opposition of the project and others in strong support of it.
"I want them to have a wonderful modern facility just don't place it by people's houses," said Ann Alton, Meridian Township resident.
The Special Use Permit for the building will be at the April 1st, Meridian Township Board Meeting for possible action.
